(Kumamoto, July 28) Japan's meteorological authorities have formally named today's destructive tremor the "Reiwa 8 Kumamoto Earthquake" — only the second time Japan has assigned an official earthquake name since the Noto Peninsula disaster of January 2024. The Japan 7.1-magnitude earthquake struck Kumamoto Prefecture at 4.27pm local time, triggering a major disaster response including the first activation of Japan's Extraordinary Disaster Response Headquarters in over two years, the deployment of 3,600 Self-Defence Force personnel, and the evacuation of approximately 217,000 people across three prefectures.
Earthquake Scale and Damage
The Japan 7.1-magnitude earthquake was centred in the Kumamoto district at a depth of approximately 10 kilometres, recording maximum intensity 7 at Uki City and Hikawa Town. Intensity 6-upper was measured across Kumamoto City's southern ward, Yatsushiro City and several other municipalities. Tsunami advisories were issued for coastal areas across Kumamoto and neighbouring prefectures. The JMA noted that the epicentre falls near the Hinagu fault zone associated with the 2016 Kumamoto earthquakes, raising concern about the potential for further large events.
AEON Mall Explosion and Collapse
The most dramatic single incident of the disaster occurred at the AEON Mall Kumamoto in Kashima Town — a large shopping complex with over 120,000 square metres of floor space that opened in 2005 — which experienced a major explosion approximately 30 to 40 minutes after the earthquake. NHK helicopter footage showed extensive exterior damage, exposed steel framing, partial roof and second-floor collapse, and what appeared to be a blast-caused opening in the upper structure. Multiple people were reported to have died in the collapse, with rescue teams still working to reach others believed to be trapped. Eyewitnesses described a loud detonation followed by grey smoke and white ash falling on surrounding streets and vehicles.
Casualty and Impact Data
Evacuation orders covered approximately 217,000 people; 318 emergency calls were received by police; at least seven fires were burning in Kumamoto Prefecture; 48,000 households lost power; 12 buildings collapsed; at least 50 people were hospitalised; nine were missing or trapped. Kumamoto Airport's runway was closed; JR Kyushu suspended all services; multiple flights were cancelled or diverted; the Kumagawa bridge in Yatsushiro collapsed; the Kyushu Expressway sustained structural damage near Yatsushiro; Toyota, Bridgestone and Nippon Paper suspended operations. TSMC's JASM subsidiary evacuated its Kumamoto facility as a precaution.
Government Response
Prime Minister Takaichi chaired the "Extraordinary Disaster Response Headquarters" — the first such body to be convened since the 2024 Noto earthquake — with defence, welfare, transport and other senior ministers attending. Around 3,600 SDF personnel were dispatched to the disaster zone. The government directed push-type supply of food, water, emergency cooling and power equipment to evacuation centres. Officials said the response would prioritise search and rescue above all else.
Meteorological Agency Warning
The JMA warned clearly that the next two to three days carry a high risk of further major seismic activity, that an earthquake of magnitude 7 or above cannot be excluded over the coming week, and that the current level of seismic activity in the region remains elevated. Officials called on residents to avoid damaged structures, stay clear of areas at risk of landslides and ensure they are in a safe location before nightfall.
