Enforcement Action Takes Place Following Community Complaints in Selangor
On the evening of the 15th, a large-scale Immigration Department operation was conducted along Old Klang Road in Petaling Jaya, Selangor, in response to residents’ complaints about disturbances caused by alleged illegal squatter activities involving foreigners. The area, known for its mixed residential and commercial use, has recently been impacted by reports of public safety issues linked to gatherings of undocumented individuals. During the enforcement exercise, a total of 131 individuals were inspected, including 82 foreign men, 34 foreign women and 15 local Malaysian citizens. Authorities detained 90 foreign nationals between the ages of 21 and 35. These individuals were reportedly from African countries such as Nigeria, Yemen, Syria, Somalia, Guinea-Bissau, Sierra Leone, Liberia and Mali, in addition to 16 Asian nations including Indonesia, Myanmar, Bangladesh, Vietnam, Thailand, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and India. Local residents had voiced concerns about noise and late-night gatherings in open parking lots, eateries, and restaurant areas, which allegedly affected neighbourhood order and security.
Authorities Confirm Investigations Focus on Immigration Violations and Illegal Residency
Datuk Zakaria, Director-General of the Malaysian Immigration Department, stated that the detained individuals were primarily involved in serious immigration offences, including overstaying their visas and using invalid travel documents. Some of those arrested reportedly attempted to use expired passes to operate stalls and conduct business openly in public spaces. The enforcement team also issued an immediate summons to a restaurant owner believed to have been aware of or assisted the illegal activities. All detainees have been transferred to the Immigration Depot at Kuala Lumpur International Airport pending further legal proceedings under Section 51(5)(b) of the Immigration Act 1959/63. The Immigration Department reaffirmed its commitment to enforcing immigration laws strictly, emphasising that no leniency would be given to illegal residence, overstaying, or misuse of passes. It highlighted ongoing efforts to penalise individuals and entities involved in employing or harbouring undocumented migrants.
